We Take Possession or "The Fun Begins" The day we took possession of the farm was interesting to say the least. The gentleman who was the previous owner thought the closing was the following day and was not quite moved out yet. After the closing we went to have some lunch and then went to the house expecting to start right away. When we got there the previous owner was still carrying things out of the house, the guy I had hired to rototill the garden (which up until now had been this fellow's lawn) was sitting in the driveway, I was brandishing a maul with intentions on tearing out a wall in the house, and the fence contractor was due to show up any minute. I am sure that the old fellow thought that we were going to destroy the place in the first week. I felt kind of sorry for him so I at least put the maul down until he was out of sight. Next came the attack of the arch nemesis of all well planned projects, the dreaded SCOPE CREEP! Once we got a closer look at the floors we decided that most of them had to go and rationalized that it would be easier to do them now than later. So I got to install hardwood flooring as a critical path item. Then came the "While you are moving that wall, don't you think that there should be a closet over here?" comment, and the "This would really look better if we paper instead of paint." suggestion. So after six weeks of working every spare moment I could muster up we were ready to move in. Oh, of course we moved on the hottest day of the entire summer just for good measure. Now that our housing was under control, it was time to turn my attention to preparing the farm to receive the girls. They were still at Kilblaan Farms and we were anxious to bring them home. I built a new floor in the barn and ran water and power form the house to the barn. We purchased a couple of books which helped us figure out all of the little things that we needed to take care of alpaca.
Both of these books can be purchased over the internet from Chase Tavern Farm Tim and Cindy Lavan, the owners of Chase Tavern Farm, were very helpful and provided us with a great deal of information while we were getting started. John and Dawn Brooker, the owners of Fiber Fields Alpaca, were also a great help. Dawn always answered all of our questions no matter how dumb some of them must have sounded. I don't know how we would have done it with out them. NEWAIM Home If you have any comments about this site or want more info on raising alpaca send email to al@newaim.com |
